PLA Pride College staff and advisors gathered November 7 to celebrate the successful completion of the Prior Learning Assessment pilot project. The project provided the opportunity for staff to complete skill demonstrations and challenge processes to obtain credit in the Office Administration Program. Notes from the David Lam Campus Early word is the Douglas College Wrestling team will shift to Coquitlam in the fall of 1997, into the new Community Centre being constructed beside the David Lam Campus. (The Centre will feature three gymnasiums, including one for use by the College.) As a result, look for the New Westminster weight room to move into the aerobics room, while aerobics heads into the larger space currently used by the wrestling team (got that?). The CMO in Coquitlam has been relocated to Room B3073, freeing up space for the Learning Centre on the main floor. The new phone number for Walter Melnyk, Communications & Marketing Officer for the David Lam Campus, is 527-5874. The First Annual Holiday Dinner and Dance was held on November 22, featuring music by DJ (and Chemistry Technician) Paul Taylor. Special thanks to Yvonne Mostert and her team for their efforts in starting up a new Douglas College tradition, and to all 120 who attended the very successful evening. ff Notes from the Thomas Haney Centre This fall has seen several changes at the Maple Ridge Campus. Marian Rossell, formerly Director, Thomas Haney Centre, has expanded her role. Marian’s title has expanded as well; she is now Director, Educational Liaison and Administrator of Reference for Thomas Haney Centre. Moving from the Educational Services Division, she now works largely out of Coquitlam, reporting to Mia Gordon, VP College Development and Administrator of Reference for the David Lam Campus. “My responsibilities now stretch throughout the College region, including Maple Ridge,” says Marian. “The goal is to work with community partners to create educational ‘ladders,’ providing seamless paths for secondary and post-secondary learners.” Marian’s assistant, Sherry Walker, continues to provide support for faculty at Thomas Haney, while Myrna Wing has become Academic Advisor for that campus. Front-line workers Vib Jose and Carol Charles now report to the Registrar’s Office, and Carol also provides afternoon and evening coverage in the Library. “As we become a true multi-campus operation, we hope that Maple Ridge will continue to be a nice place to work .. . and a nice place to learn,” Marian adds. Any questions or concerns should be directed to Marian at local 5869 (David Lam Campus) or 467-5823 (Thomas Haney Centre). ff Quote of the Month: “There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.” Edith Wharton
