editoria Dear Everybody: Here's the scoop. It's four o'clock in the morning. I'm the only one left both awake and in the office. The paper was supposed to come out yesterday, and this staff editorial (as is tradition) is the last item that needs to be written, imported into Pagemaker, printed out, and pasted up. I'm very tempted to just print the words, "It's really late, I'm really tired, so write your own damned editorial..." | tried to do it, really I did; I couldn't. Instead, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank a whole shitload of people without whom this paper would not have come to exist, especially not in the state it's in. I am uncharacteristically proud of this issue; I think it fucking rocks. _ [look over at our couches, I see two completely exhausted people, namely Holly and Zeebo, in the midst of desperately needed slumber. Neither of them even attend Douglas, they just want this paper to be as good as it can be. All the people who put in multiple hours, multiple all-nighters, multiple eons, to write, photograph, edit, design, embellish, tweek, perfect, and otherwise nurture this creature into existence: they all have names. Names like Niki, Mike, Laura, Daniela, Scott, Paul, Trent... all the people in the box below. I love them. And without Tammy, my dear Tammy Coombes, this issue wouldn't have been as special (nor as interesting). Not by far. She nearly killed herself for this piercing thing, and the result is that it's fabulous. I honestly think it's the best feature, all around, that we've printed since I got here over a year ago. Nearly everyone in this office, including myself, is going though some extremely major shit in their lives - some more pungent than others, but shit's still shit, right? Anyways, they managed to put it all aside to strap this thing together. It's amazing, really... This tribute may be self-serving, even precocious, but I don't care. I've put in a lot of hours on this ish, and seen a lot of workmates - some very close friends - do the same. I'm proud to put my name on it, as should they. I hope you can appreciate this half as much as I. This issue - like the people who.created it - are the coolest. So, to the readers, | thank you for letting me you're the best. Sincerely, icate. February 8, 1995 Cartoonists needed, we're always looking for social and political humour. letters Tuition Blues The Douglas College library, the cafeteria, the book store and the SafeWalk program are closed Friday nights. Unfortunately, students enrolled in Friday night programs are denied these services. Because these services are not available tuition fees must be discounted. The effects of these closures are lost access to library resource, lost time eating elsewhere, by taking time off work to buy books, lost money and without SafeWalk, a lost sense of security. When asked, in a personal interview with Facilities department head Terry Lennard [sic] to explain why these closures were necessary, he responded by saying, “Plain and simple, the driving force behind the closures were budget cuts.” Similarily, Al Akinson [sic], Vice President of Student Services reiterated Terry’s remarks and cited it was not economically viable to have these services operating Friday nights. In addition, Al Akinson went on to say that the closures were the least disruptive measure to the least number of students. Joe Sperman [sic] who heads SafeWalk would not respond to the inquiry. In these economic times their comments are quite understandable; but why, with full tuition payment, are we subsidising services for other Douglas Colleges students? On my bill for tuition, the charge indicating student serivices tells me I am entitiled to these sevices. These sevices must be operational Friday nights for the if you've got an opinion, we'd love to hear it! try to keep it under 300 words, and send it to the other press, room 1020, douglas college, 700 royal avenue, new westminster, b.c., v3l 3t9 tell us you love us, tell us we suck... just, for pete's sake, TELL US!!! same reason they are operational the rest of the time, they are paid for and are esential. If indeed budget shortfalls are the reason for the closurer then alternative action must be considered. Specifically, reduce the Monday to Thursday operating hours of these services and add the discounted time to the operating hours of the Friday night staff. Above all, athe SafeWalk program cannot be “heldback” and must be reinstated immediately. Accordingly, if compromise cannot be negotiated a disclaimer must be inserted into the college calander [sic] indicating the lack of Friday night services and course fees must be reduced. Wayne Devitte following Jaime McEvoy Student apathy alive and kicking Dear Other Press: Regarding the student strike and the "rally" that followed, I am amazed a that more students from around our great city didn't come out and demand to be heard. The proposal Axeworthy is trying to pass will make it impossible for many students to go to college or university in the near future. Why did more students NOT ; attend the rally or speak out? Why are so many students just worried about getting to work on time or class on time instead of working on ensuring that we will be able to afford to continue educating ourselves? On the National Day of Strike, how many people went to class? Raise your hands like good boys and girls. Now, how many decided not to be apathetic and protested? How many acted like socially-responsible adults * and tried to make life better for the future? Bruno Guzzo Someone's on speed... Dear Other Press: While reading your January 27 issue, I came across Jason Kurylo’s Culture Shock, which called Keanu Reeves “Ol’ Woodface.” lam shocked and disgusted at your treatment of this fine actor. Mr. Reeves is a genius, able to convey more emotion in a single glance than I could ever hope to accomplish. If you do not print a retraction, I will be forced to stop reading your paper. Keanu is a great actor. Yours Sincerely, K. Russell [Jason's reply: "Forget it. He sucks."]
