College President Susan Witter (above) cuts the ribbon officially opening the new Fitness Centre at the New Westminster Campus. Visitors munched on dried apples and watched as Witter and Vice President Educational Services Al Atkinson chalked up a kilometer each on one of the treadmill and stationary bikes, starting the “This is a wonderful opportunity to launch our new Youth Justice Worker Program (YJWP) and to connect more fully with some of the social services agencies for which we train future employees,” says John Fleming, one of the designers of the proposed YJWP. The symposium explores the issues and needs related to women and youth involved in the criminal justice system. Topics will address violence and crime, addiction, supporting youth in their development, and enabling clients to more fully manage the circumstances of their lives. This two-day event features leading researchers and academics such as Sybille Artz, Associate Professor and Director of the University of Victoria School of Child and Youth Care, as well as Joyce Preston, British Columbia’s first Child, Youth and Family Advocate. Participants can take part in over 40 workshops and panel discussions, several of which will be delivered by College faculty and alumni from across several disciplines. “We are proud to extend an invitation to the entire community and look forward to a good turnout,” says Fleming. A special rate of $50 has been set for College staff. College artists hard at work Robin Ripley's latest mixed media series Designer De-signed is showing at the Havana Gallery, 1212 Commercial Drive from March 1-24. She has also had two pieces selected for the juried art showcase of BC artists “Artropolis” which takes place in April at the CBC building. Robin works part-time in the New Westminster campus library. Don’t miss Sacred Voices, an exhibition of abstract works on canvas and paper by Paul Biscop of Anthropology. Developed over 25 years in response to ideas derived from Fractal Geometry, the show is being held at the New Westminster Public Library Gallery, Feb 26-April 2. Comings and goings in EASL EASL instructor Joan Barnet will be working with EASL faculty at the Universidad Tecnologica de Cancun, Mexico in April, to develop curriculum for an ESL content-based classroom for the tourism industry. This project is a result of a successful joint proposal (from Douglas College and UTC) for ICEED funding. Judith Dale, EASL instructor, will be moving to Kyoto, Japan at the end of March to begin a two-year teaching contract with Kyoto University. College EASL instructors have been teaching EFL (English as a Foreign Language) at Kyoto TelReg for College Employees Summer 2001 registration for College employees begins at 13:30 on March 7. Instructor Wendie Reinhart, who just completed a two-year stint at Kyoto, will be returning to the David Lam Campus in the Summer semester. Wendie and her husband, Bill, will stay a few days in Kyoto after Judy arrives to provide orientation to the university and to local shops and transportation.
