Start for art’s sake The portrait work of Chris Woods, called No Technology, was the inaugural show of the Amelia Douglas Gallery in 1992. Woods is one of the artists featured in the gallery's retrospective show running until August 18. l. opened with a series of moody Gen X portraits called No Technology in April 1992. Now, more than 30 shows later, the Amelia Douglas Gallery shifts into its fourth season with something old and something new. The old is a welcome show culled from the Amelia Douglas collection, a retrospective displaying the variety of art exhibited in the fourth-floor gallery. Many works of the gallery’s collection are displayed in meeting rooms, the Library, and other public spaces around the College. However, security concerns have necessitated that others be stored and not seen until now. Entitled Current Collection and running until August 18, the show features works by Chris Woods (painter of No Technology), Hazel King, Wang Jinglong and others. The new is a stronger call for greater faculty and staff participation in gallery openings and the work of the Art Exhibit Committee. “We see the mission of the gallery is to offer a humanistic element to Douglas College. It provides an area for repose and reflection, and that is very important in an institution like ours,” offers committee member Marty Sulek of the Foundation. That humanistic role can include being a little provocative. Subjects in some past exhibits have raised eyebrows and controversy, but that’s part of art’s function, says Sulek. “We are very conscious about not censoring ourselves and limiting the kind of art projects we select. The gallery is meant to be challenging and to offer different ideas and perceptions.” The Art Exhibit Committee meets approximately once a month. Members help select future shows and are expected to take responsibility for curating and publicizing one show each season. Anyone with an interest in art is welcome.
