The Latest from the Universities Three documents which I read over the weekend are of interest to Douglas faculty. First, The Performance of Transfers from Douglas College in their Initial Year at UBC 1972-1973 Session (Jim Jamieson, Office of Student Services, UBC, September 1973). Gerry Della Mattia and I will be analyzing these data in detail, but a few interesting facts: (1) Of our 109 students, 48.6% received full credit; 29.4% partial (prior to supps); 22% no credit. (2) Mean GPA 2.75. (3) Largest faculty enrollments: arts 29, commerce 6, applied science 9, science 9, secondary education 9. (4) Standings: first class, 2 students; 2nd class, 39; pass, 12; partial credit, 32; failed, 8; withdrew, 16; total, 109. Second, Dr. E. Kennedy (mathematics, University of Victoria) has chaired a committee planning a four year bachelor of social work program at University of Victoria. The program is to be innovative, emphasizing a multi-disciplinary approach. UBC is also planning to introduce a bachelor of social work by September of 1974, following a more traditional program. Third, Teacher Surplus: Fact or Fantasy (Claire Hurley, UBC) reviews employment opportunities for beginning teachers in B.C. (limited to UBC trainees). (1) Of 1972 class, 10.6% ate unemployed teachers. 1971 figure: 9.8%, 1970: 4.8%. (2) 1971: 73.8% of secondary teachers employed; 64.5% elemen- tary teachers employed. (3) 1972: _47Z of eligible teachers employed. Sheilah Thompson
