INside ... The Douglas College Newsletter m New Westminster Campus, David Lam Campus & Thomas Haney Campus IN Douglas College Triple week a success for Foundation and students Triple your fun to triple the fund week is over, but the results of the week will benefit students for years to come. “The response from employees was wonderful,” says Myrna Popove, Executive Director of the Foundation. “Our single biggest accomplishment was to increase the number of payroll deduction donors by 23 percent. This means there’s now more than $5,000 going towards student aid each year.” Events included a phone- in auction, daily 50-50 draws, delivery of happy- face helium balloons, cookie and chocolate sales and a penny drive. “In all, over $3,300 was raised from Foundation events held during Triple Week,” says Popove. “In addition to that, over $5,000 was raised from cheques and cash donations made from February 15 to the end of March.” Some of the money raised for student aid goes directly to bursaries, while a portion goes into endowment funds. In this way, the Foundation can meet some of the critical immediate need for dollars as well as build for the future. “There was great support for all of the individual activities, with the happy- face balloon delivery, Purdy’s chocolate suckers and 50-50 tickets being very popular,” says Popove. “The Presidential car wash team — College President Susan Witter, Vice President Educational Services Al Atkinson, Executive Secretary to the President Barb Bessey, Executive Secretary to the College Board Margaret Murray, Communications & Marketing Director Brad Barber and Building Service Worker Lance Hurst — was awesome. They're already talking about meeting ahead of time and developing some marketing strategies for next year!” Next year’s week will be a bit different, now that the provincial government's matching endowment program has ended. Employee donations are still matched by the College, however, so the name will be changed to Double your fun to double the fund. “We'd like to expand the activities and partners for next year,” says Popove. “We'd also like more activities at the David Lam and Thomas Haney Campuses.” If you have any ideas for activities for next year or would like to participate in some way, please contact Myrna Popove at popovem @douglas.bc.ca or at 604-527-5873.
