Nursing news Once again, it’s been a busy spring for General Nursing students. “It is a time of transition for the program,” says Instructor Shirley McKinley. “But judging from their accomplishments this semester, our diploma and new program students are all doing extremely well.” McKinley reports that there is now just one more group of diploma students to complete Semester Four, as the current program makes way for the new collaborative program with the University of Victoria. “Some students in the new program will graduate with a diploma after a bridge-out session,” she notes. “But many will now continue on immediately to earn a degree in nursing.” While new program students held a successful Health Fair the week of March 17, current fourth semester students held their Nursing Showcase March 10. To tie in with the International Council of Nurses convention being held in Vancouver in June, this year’s Showcase focused on the role of nurses in world health. “Since we have been chosen as a Visitor site, we are expecting convention delegates at the College,” McKinley says. “And we will be able to show these international visitors samples of the students’ work.” For the Showcase, judges from across the College were asked to rate the student projects against set criteria. Steve Mainprize of Sociology and Lou Rene Legge of the Centre for Sport, Recreation & Wellness served as this year’s “non- nurse” judges. Along with program graduate Arleigh Bell (now President of the local RNABC chapter), Instructor Fariyal Dhirani and Barb McLeod of St. Mary’s Hospital, they faced the difficult task of selecting the winning project. Students Christa Brown and Roberta Sonolet triumphed overall for their project on the role of nurses in the promotion of breast-feeding worldwide. Darin Belliveau, Petra Bourne and Aristotle Serrano won the “People’s Choice” book prize for their project on multicultural issues in health and nursing. “Special thanks to everyone in the College who helped to make the Showcase a success,” says McKinley. “We look forward to giving the work an international audience in June.” §f Shirley McKinley looks on as General Nursing students Roberta Sonolet and Christa Brown accept their prize from John McKendry.
