INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / MAY 30, 1989 Anyone who tries to get an out- line and finds it continuously busy is aware that we have outgrown our telephone system. We are currently not only short out-trunks, but we also have no ability to add locals, as any of you who are sharing a local are aware. At its September 22, 1989 meet- ing, the College Board approved in principle the upgrading or expand- ing of the telephone system and the use of Ancillary Service fund revenues for that purpose. A committee of representatives from each department was set up to evaluate and assess the current and future telecommunication require- ments of the college. The committee membership consisted of: Trish Angus, Office of the Registrar, Barbara Bessey, Senior Administration; John Blackwell, Commerce & Business Dept.; Devona Davies, Purchasing Dept.; Brenda Jack, Community Programs & Services; Marsh Price, Systems & Computing; Barbara Sekhon, English & Communications; Pat Thomasson, Facilities Services Dept. In consultation with Tricor, the telecommunication consulting firm, and the committee members, and through detailed interviews with representatives of users in every department of the college 1) the existing system and procedures were reviewed. 2) specifications, designs and other documents were compiled for the solicitation of proposals for © the supply, installation, commissioning and maintenance of a telecommunication system. Mitel’s SX2000 was the committee's choice as the best sys- tem to meet the college’s current & future requirements. This was ap- proved by the College Board on April 20. Some of the features you will enjoy with the new system are: 1) expanded trunkage - we have expanded the trunks by 50%, which means no trouble getting an outline. 2) 100% D.I.D. - we have chosen to go 100% direct-in-dial which gives the caller the opportunity to call directly to your office instead of going through the Switchboard. eNew Telecommunications System Approved for College 3) expanded feature sets - key answering positions throughout the institution; in particular, curriculum field bases will be receiving new phones which will allow them to answer the phone more efficiently. 4) Voice messaging - this allows each person to have an answering machine on their phone, but with expanded functions. More about this in the next issue of the Insider. The projected cutover date of the new system is June 23. I will be providing regular updates in the Insider of the status of the system.
