douglas college Inter Office Memo To: From: Re: DOUGLAS COLLEGE BOARD W.L. DAY | VOUGLAS COLLEGE ARCHIVES PRESIDENT'S REPORT fia? External Matters - Municipal The Coquitlam Planning Department has contacted us regarding the site that has been reserved in the Coquitlam Town Center for a future College campus. The evolution of the Coquitlam Center is continuing rapidly, and there is concern regarding the land area that has been allocated for community college activity. The administration will be making a recommendation to the Board regarding the college's stance in | this regard at the next Board meeting. Work continues on a New Westminster economic strategy, through the College's involvement in the Royal City Community Development Association. College involvement continues with the Coquitlam Chambers activities in this regard. The College has received strong support from the New Westminster and Coquitlam Chambers for the Centre for Enterprise Development. A recent meeting has been held, involving the Ministries of Education, and Municipal Affairs, and the B.C. Chambers of Commerce. As a result, Douglas College will be given access to the Municipal Taxation Data bases, as a "live" data base that can be used for instructional purposes, as well as for analytical models that might be asked for on a contract basis by outside organizations. A report from the Business Department will be forthcoming on this matter to the Education and Services Committee of the Board. On June 12th, the Downtown New Westminster Association held a special meeting, at which time future directions were examined. The primary focus of interest at this time is the economic impact of the ALRT terminals on New Westminster. In this regard, the Downtown New Westminster Association has expressed enthusiasm and appreciation for a marketing analysis carried out by Douglas College students under the leadership of Mr. Richard Mann, Supervising Architect for the ALRT project, and Mr. Lynn Leavens of the Business Administration Department. I am told that the same document is being used by the First Capital City Development Company as part of its resource material, and also that the research team working on the New Westminster Economic Strategy will be using it as part of their data base.
