External Matters - Municipal Over the past month, my work has continued with the Royal City Development Group, which is now well into the framing of an economic redevelopment strategy for New Westminster. We are looking forward to substantial funding for the next stage of the project, which is attract- ing considerable recognition throughout the province. We expect that Douglas College students will be involved in the economic Strategy as they were in the development of the New Westminster Profile. On November 29th and December 5th I attended meetings of the Business Council of British Columbia Education Task Force, and the Board of Directors of the Downtown New Westminster Association. On December 6th, I had the pleasure of addressing about 50 represen- tatives of community agencies and businesses in the Douglas College region, regarding Douglas College's future development and role in the region. The Board will be pleased to know that our Sciences and Mathematics Department's submission for ecological research projects for Burnaby Lake and Balcarra have been approved by the Federal Government. This reflects well on the imagination and enterprise of members of our Sciences and Mathematics Department, and will enhance the quality of our educational program. B. External Matters - Education Mr. Gilgan and Dr. Clement have been at work informing the New Westminster and Burnaby Chambers of Commerce of the Significance of our Co-operative Education proposal. As a result of the Burnaby discussions, Douglas College, PVI, and BCIT are engaged in joint development of Co-operative Education activities. On November 21, I was a member of the Council of Principals Table Officers group that met with the Deputy Minister to discuss working problems and directions of the system. On that same date, Table Officers of the BCAC met with the Table Officers of the Council of Principals to discuss closer working relationships in the future. On November 29, I was prvi ae to act as host at Malaspina College, to a delegation from Shaansi Province, China. I was acting on behalf of Dr. Bruce Fraser, who could not be present. It is very likely that Douglas will be involved in a modest exchange program with Shaansi Province during this next year. a iZ
