And as a ‘college person,’ I must say it does seem symbolic as one more step on the road to full acceptance and understanding of our role.” The Order of Canada pays tribute to those who exemplify the highest qualities of citizenship and whose contributions enrich the lives of their contemporaries. Day was cited for his work throughout a 40-year career to improve access to adult education and community college programs. In addition to his 25 years of service with Douglas College, he played a major role in the establishment of the community college system in BC. Nationally, he helped to foster the growth of the college system as Chair of the Association of Canadian Community Colleges. Today, he continues to advise on matters involving continuing education and technical training. “We salute Bill for this recognition of his tremendous efforts on behalf of students and community colleges,” says College Board Chair Neal Nicholson. “The motto of the Order of Canada is ‘They desire a better country.’ That is a perfect description of Bill’s life-long drive to improve access to post-secondary education.” Becky Brown (left) as the defiantly sloppy Olive and Colleen Watkins (right) as the fanatically neat Florence in Neil Simon's The Odd Couple (Female Version), running March 6-14 in the Performing Arts Theatre. There's also still time to catch the sizzling Brecht on Brecht, on until March 7 in the Studio Theatre—call 527- 5488 for details. Briefly June in January The Bookstore’s June Anderson is still ecstatic over the latest addition to her clan—a grandson born October 1, 1997 in Perth, Australia. Daughter Su Griggs (nee Anderson—who many remember from her stint in the Bookstore stacks) and husband Nick were thrilled to welcome Brian Thomas to the world “down under.” Anderson took special leave last August to go help out, but boomeranged back by mid-January to report that all is well, with photos now ready for viewing! New chapter for Chabots Nicole Chabot (also of the Bookstore) and family welcomed a baby boy, Joel Richard, on January 23. The new arrival weighed in at 7 lbs., 8 oz.— and he’s still easier to carry around than some of those science textbooks! Mom and son attended a shower held at the College on February 18. "Odds" favor Douglas College family Forget about Oscar and Felix; it’s time to meet Olive and Florence. The Theatre and Stagecraft departments are presenting Neil Simon’s update of his comedy classic about two incompatible roommates coping with divorce, dirt and disinfectant—and you’re invited. The Performing Arts Theatre spring run of The Odd Couple (Female Version) will feature one performance reserved for the Douglas College Family Appreciation Night set for Friday, March 13. To acknowledge and celebrate our collective “family” efforts, the Centre for Sport, Recreation & Wellness (with thanks to the Foundation, Floors Modern, Landis and Staefa) has raised funds for College employees plus one guest each to enjoy a complimentary dinner and evening of theatre. Dinner starts at 6:30pm in the 2nd floor cafeteria (wine available for purchase), followed by the Odd Couple (Female Version) at 8pm. A no-host bar will be set up in the Theatre foyer, and glass artist John Swadden will be available to guide guests through the current Amelia Douglas Gallery show. To sign up for this special evening, call Continuing Education at 527-5472 ASAP (capacity =325 total), quoting Q999A- 19981 for the performance only, and Q999B-19981 for performance and dinner. @ Marketing genius The Bookstore is also happy to report that Marketing Instructor Gerard Edwards has won a $50 voucher for being the first to submit his textbook list for the summer semester.
