The team, consisting of faculty, staff and administration representatives, made its recommendations to the Management Committee based on results of an employee health and safety survey last October. The survey was part of a program established in co-operation with the Workers Compensation Board (WCB) which includes annual reviews of Douglas College’s new First Nations Coordinator Betsy Senyk meets with delegates at a Western Canada student newspaper conference on February 18 at Douglas College. Coordinator helps cultures learn together As Douglas College’s new First Nations Student Services Coordinator, Betsy Senyk plans to make sure First Nations students get what they need to be successful in their education. ° "Many First Nations students who visit Douglas College and other post-secondary institutions often find themselves in unfamiliar and intimidating settings. They take one look and say, this is not for me," says Senyk. A typical First Nations student at Douglas College comes directly from the Native Education Centre in Vancouver where he or she has taken preliminary courses in specialties such as Criminology. Other students are enrolled in university transfer programs. According to Senyk, most First Nations students are sponsored by their band. Often she finds herself acting as a liaison between the band and student. "If, for example, a student is having problems dealing with a full course load I will discuss the issue with the band and examine alternatives." In her position, which runs for one semester and will then be reviewed, Senyk also acts as an academic, employment and Helps continued on page 2 health/safety issues at the College workplace. The issue rated as the highest priority by survey respondents was College air quality.
