An examination of 19 years of work related competencies shows graduates of this popular one year program were rated at 94 per cent satisfactory, says Douglas College instructor Bob Shebib in a report evaluating the CSSW program and graduates. In total, Shebib questioned 39 employers and in every case, the people said they would continue to hire Douglas College social service worker graduates. The survey also revealed that in the past four years graduates found work in 89 per cent of all cases, and 83 per cent of these were working in fields related to their studies. Generally, students from the program found jobs with private social service work agencies (45 per cent) or as financial aid workers with the Ministry of Human Resources (39 per cent). The employers' greatest satisfaction with the former students came in the areas of tolerance and respect for clients, empathy, verbal communication skills and overall attitude, the report says. And the majority of respondents said that Douglas College graduates are preferred over those from other programs in the province. "Our graduates are perceived as competent workers, able to find | employment," Shebib says. "And the program is specifically designed to make them more employable."
