Contest Winners Continued “Soul of Maple Ridge” Wins Trip to Las Vegas contest six times. Ironically, they were both on hand when the win- ning ticket was drawn. Meanwhile, Sherry Walker, a clerk at the Maple Ridge campus, has been declared the official win- ner of the “Surprise Someone” contest. Walker has also been awarded a trip for two to Las Vegas. In the contest, College employees were asked to write a short paragraph nominating a co- worker (staff or faculty) who they think deserves a pat on the back. Specifically, they were asked to nominate someone who they think is “making a difference” at Douglas College. A group of four students work- ing in the PIO for the summer poured over several dozen entries and selected a winner. Maureen Jaeggle of Develop- mental Studies nominated Walker. Jaeggle wrote “Sherry is the soul of the Maple Ridge campus. She is the symbol (and the backbone) of what we consider to be a community- based program. Maple Ridge has developed a unique flavour in that there is a very personal liaison be- tween college and community. Sherry is that bond!” Walker has been with the Col- lege for 10 years. She reacted with total shock and disbelief when told she had won the trip. “Sherry is one of the people who’s seen the Maple Ridge cam- pus grow from a small campus into what it is today,” says co-worker Marlene Howie. “She’s done so much work and really cares for students. Sherry really deserves the trip.” The number of entries for the Surprise Someone contest proved there are many people at the Col- lege who deserve special recognition. That’s why the Inside will publish a selection of the entries in future editions of the newsletter. Both the Faces of the Past and the Surprise Someone contests were organized by the PIO as part of the College’s 20th anniversary celebration. The year-long celebra- tion officially begins in September and runs until June, 1990.
