An informal committee of interested college members has been meeting this spring to dis- cuss immediate and practical ways of promoting ยง health and fitness in the campus community. Information has been shared about resources available for health promotional activities. The committee, consisting of Marilyn Smith and Sandra Carpenter from Counselling and Student Services, Chris Johnson from Fine Arts and Win Matheson from Health Services, has presently tabled their activities. In late August or early September, a general notice will be sent out inviting anyone interested to discuss the area of Health Promotion and propose a standing committee to plan and coordinate activities. The committee might be composed of representa- tives from among faculty, staff and students. The committee has done several things already this year to start the ball roll- ing. A memo has been sent to the Principal re- questing that juice or some other nutri- tious alternative be available in addition to the ever-present coffee at meetings. A proposal was submitted to the college- wide Personnel Development Committee that activities be planned to emphasize the health and fitness of all partici- pants. Though no extensive activities were incorporated into the May plans, Chris Johnson will be offering a step- test. for those of you who want to find out how fit you are. Chris Johnson has met with the Principal to design a submission to the Minister . of Recreation and Leisure regarding community college programs for preventa- , tive health practices. Also discussed by the committee was a * memorandum to be sent to the Snack Bar : on each campus requesting inclusion of more nutritious snacks on their menu. = The Student Services Division, in co-operation with Health Services and Chris Johnson held a Professional Development Day on March 11 to dis- cuss what we could all do to promote our own health and that of our students. Served for lunch was an excellent and nutritious meal including yogurt, 8. alfalfa sprouts and lots of juice. lf you appreciate the work the committee has been attempting, we hope you will plan to come to the fall meeting with your support and suggestions.
