August 2003 Best of New West —Sports The most successful team according to Flash Gordon: It’s a tie between the Royals’ bowling team and the chess team. As conquering editor of Douglas Athletics, I had to take decisive action in breaking the tie. The chess team was dis- qualified for being poorly dressed and not being a sport despite their better record. The bowlers were thrilled about the announcement and credit all of their success to many beers and very supportive families. When looking for fur- ther comment, no one within the college or in the bowling community had ever heard of the Douglas Royals bowling team. The best looking team according to Flash Gordon: No team could be named for this category since I kept being removed from the women’s locker room in my attempts to judge all players. Damn you, Paladin Security. In its stead, I pro- pose forming the Douglas College bikini team. Tryouts will be held in my office before the end Douglas College OP Contributor Donald Burton is a quiet, modest man of action who has managed to turn a few heads in the college basket- ball recruiting scene. 2003 has been a string of suc- cesses for Burton, and he is now a Douglas College Royal men’s basketball player. By mid-July Burton commited his talents to Douglas College for the new ship’s captain, Stephen McGilligan. The two newcom- ers to the British Columbia College Athletic Association scene have much work ahead of them but they are in it together. McGilligan is extremely excited to have Burton on board. “He is exceptional,” says McGilligan, who tracked the White Rock Christian Academy guard through the AAA high school provin- cial tournament. Burton’s team won the championship and the six foot guard was named Most Valuable Player. One can see why McGilligan would be so excit- ed. Burton came from his native Jamaica when he was nine and credits childhood friend Kurtis Walford for getting him into basketball. Brian Lee, St.Georges in Vancouver and Steve Anderson, South Ridge Private School, have been inspirational coaches for him. David Smart of the 2003 Canadian Inter-university Sport (CIS) Champions, Carleton Ravens, coached Burton Sports e¢ the other press © White Rock’s Burton can make an impact in first at the Nike All-Canadian recruiting camp in Toronto. McGilligan feels Donald could easily step into a Canadian University basketball program with his skills but Douglas allows him to gain some confidence and orient himself with post-secondary life. Burton is no stranger to hard work; he worked a part-time job through high school to pay for his education at the White Rock Christian Academy. McGilligan pledges to help do “everything (he) can academically” to make the first year at Douglas a great one. Burton is excited to join the ranks of the Royals, whom he says are, “a great bunch of guys.” Since many of the Royals’ starters having left the program, there is ample opportunity for this Jamaican wonder to step in and show his Jason Kidd-like moves. With a new coach on the scene, Burton will be on the same page with some of the veterans who have to adapt to McGilligan’s zeal for man-to-man defense and condi- tioning. Throughout the summer he will develop his strength and quickness with a combination of weight- training and plyometrics. His focuses are short term goals for the next year; he wants to fit in with the team and to do well in school. of semester. Classifieds printing for all of the above cate- gories.
