I also had the opportunity to discuss the coordination of international development activities with the President and Board Chair from Langara College, which will be one of the collaborating members of the BC Open University (B.C.O.U.) Talso met with Glen Farrell from O.L.A. as well as several prominent Mexican university presidents. The draft document outlining the mandate and operations of the B.C.O.U. has been finalized and will be circulated in June. I was honored to participate in the campaign kick-off for the David Lam campus on May 2nd, and was delighted to hear Dr. Lam provide strong words of support for post-secondary education and for Douglas College. On a positive note, I’m pleased to report that while I was away, Marian Rossell met with Neal Nicholson and West Graydon, and together they have been able to allocate space at the Lam campus for the President’s office as well as for support personnel. | Prior Learning...continued from page 1 employers and professional associations to PLA grads. “We are now Starting a comprehensive evaluation of all activities to gauge our success in matching college- level learning equivalents with learning outcomes. We’ ve come a long way in the last year.” One success story is the 1996 Office Administration Prior Learning Pilot Project, which matched College employees with advisors Martha Entin and Wilma McCrossan. Staff from many areas of the College were taken through the assessment process to learn how to compile and present evidence of their prior learning in this area. ‘“These students represent the best kind of PLA candidates,” says Ebner. “They’re self- motivated, well-organized, autonomous learners. They already have expertise and experience, and are now seeking accreditation. We should all be proud.” Several other Pilot Projects were conducted over the last year, in areas such as Therapeutic Recreation, Early Childhood Education and Community Support Worker, with Financial Services being looked into as a possibility for the fall. | Education Council Highlights To encourage wider awareness of the Education Council and the issues it deals with, INside will report regularly on meeting highlights. Full meeting minutes are posted monthly outside the Library, and Council Chair Roberta Bend can be reached for more information at local 5384. As a follow-up to issues raised at March’s meeting, Lorna McCallum made two motions: that the Diploma in Arts and Science be officially reinstated, and that the College officially recognize specialized Associate Degrees on student’s transcripts and diplomas if legally possible. Both motions were carried, with Lorna and Trish Angus to check on the legal issue. Following a motion by Tim Shireman, it was decided that the College continue to offer the Diploma in General Studies for one academic year, with a Task Force to be organized for a report due in November, 1996. Trish Angus, Lorna McCallum and Tim Shireman volunteered to serve on the Task Force, and are looking for one member from ESL and one member from Pure and Applied Science and Technology. Discussion also involved the approval in principle of collaboration in the offering of a Bachelor of Arts in Police Studies with OLA, the Justice Institute and BCIT. Before the Council considers the notice of motion, Gary Parkinson and Liz Peerless will be invited to speak to the proposal at the June meeting. Also to be considered next meeting is approval of the proposed Diploma Program in Hotel and Restaurant Management for implementation in September, 1996. A representative from the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration will speak to this motion. The Council did approve in principle the 14-point proposal offering an Advanced Certificate in the Applied Environmental Studies Program effective September, 1997. |
