Not tone: There are two items which I feel are probably of interest and/or concern to many readers, including students, staff, faculty and administration. Perhaps airing them in The Mad Hatter might bring about some improvement in both areas. 1. PARKING We are constantly reminded that various ways of parking are illegal and may lead to unpleasant results for the perpetrator. ‘We know that space is limited and parking sometimes difficult, causing inconvenience and annoyance to drivers. It surprises me, therefore, that no mention has ever been made, or request addressed to, the selfish parkers who reduce the space available unnecessarily. Almost every time one tries to park it is possible to see several cars parked either so close to the line that it is impossible for the car in the next stall to open the door easily, or even right over the line so that one space is unusable. Could drivers be more considerate in this way, and if they are not could they not be towed away as parking violators? A few such times and I think they would cease to offend in this fashion. 2. SMOKING Being a non-smoker myself (and apparently becoming one of a majority instead of a minority!), I was delighted to see’the "no smoking" placards in classrooms, backed up by the very sensible and factual article by Ton Porter in "The Pinion" (which I read to my students.) However, I was taken aback to find the classrooms still containing ash-trays, which tended to make enforcement of the rule awkward ~ particularly when they are full of stubs from a previous class! I was even more surprised during Faculty and Staff Development Days to see the "no smoking" notices on the walls and ash-trays generously distributed around the four-room complex! Not only that, but on behalf of several suffering participants, I did on several occasions request that at least people be requested to smoke only cigarettes, since we were being choked by pives and cigars. Not until far on in the week was this done. The point is, if a rule is made, for goodness sake enforce it - otherwise don't make it. I did think that there was actuslly a city by-law forbidding smoking in class~ rooms for reasons of fire safety. If this is so, it should be even more easy to demand adherence to the rule. Yours, pestered by parking problems and pollution! Nm. —_—_—_— —~—) Cr okt VA Jean M. Buzan
