a We SS On November 29* the DSU will hold a special general meeting with one item on the agenda, a motion to impeach the members of the board. A lot of media coverage, including the OP, has put a lot of pressure on the DSU to explain the actions of Finance and Services Coordinator Joey Hansen who has been implicated in several unproven allegations. After a motion to terminate him earlier in the year failed, Hansen ended up on paid leave. A lack of awareness of the DSU’s role has included them in the controversy surrounding Joey Hansen. Hansen has become the target of several news agencies, but what hasn’t been disclosed is the difficult position that some of the DSU members are in. As shop steward, Yasmin Irani is responsible to protect the rights of the employees of the DSU on behalf of CUPE. Whether Irani agrees or disagrees with Hansen’s decisions, it’s her job to defend him. The current campaign in the concourse by the DSU was an effort to communicate to the students who have signed the petition, that in fact Joey Hansen is not in an elected position, but is in fact an employee on staff. The petition that was submitted calls for the impeachment of the current members of the board who were appointed on September 30. In their defense they canvassed both campus lobbies, Monday to Friday, Nov. 13-17, in an attempt to clarify exactly what to expect at the SGM. The SGM will take place on November 29, 4:30pm, in a. room yet to be announced at the New Westminster campus. The OP talked to Bargaining Unit and Shop Steward Yasmin Irani, and External Relations Coordinator, Inder Gill, about the controversies that have occurred in the last year. What lead up to the Contested Election in March? “There was an initial ballot count until 2 in the morning, and that was a disaster. Folks were tired, and numbers weren’t adding up, so we had to count them a second time. But what ha pened was one of the 12 committee members had leaked what he had thought was the offi results to his friends who were on two of the slates (campaigning), when we’d all agreed th: we would have to do a second count to make sure the numbers matched up. We knew it wa highly contested election, and it'd be highly litigioys as well, that was our biggest concern. S instead, he did the opposite, he leaked that (info) to his colleagues.” “During rush periods, we found that some of the poll clerks weren’t handing out all the ba they were supposed to, which is a problem, regardless. But it’s not a big deal if the margins victory are big, but the margins of victory were quite narrow, so that determined what we I to do next. We consulted legal counsel, and they recommended we declare two positions vacant, and recommended a by-election be called in the fall semester. The two positions thi were declared vacant are College Relations Coordinator (now filled by Glenn Banania), and Internal Relations Coordinator (Nav Dardi).”
