INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / MAY 8, 1990 Temporary library closure planned First the good news, then the bad news. Actually, any news about the library automation project is good! Now that we are finally getting rid of those microfiche catalogues, we can all admit how much we dis- liked them. The new computer ter- minals will make looking up books so much easier and more ac- curate that the old microfiche days will seem like a bad dream. But the immediate good news is that the wiring is all going in ac- cording to schedule. Two cheerful computer cable installers have been around the library all week with miles of wiring disappearing into the ceilings, and lots of insula- tion falling to the floor. The bad news is the probable partial closing of the library from May 28 to June 8. Every single book in the library has to have a barcode put on it, and that means 89,000 unique barcodes matched up with the correct books. The only realistic way to get this work done is for every library employee to pitch in. So, the plan is to close the library during most of the above days. The library would be open 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. Mon- day to Friday, and from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening on the affected days. Faculty will need to book audio-visual equipment and software ahead of time so arrange- ments can be made for pick-up and return. Any questions, comments, or concerns should be addressed to Virginia Chisholm, Director of Learning Resources at local 5182. @ Briefs Learning Resources PD Day The Library, Technical Services and IMS will be closed on Tuesday, May 15 so that all personnel may participate in the Learning Resources Professional Development Day. Virginia Chisholm Sechelt Vacation Cabin Still vacant in June, $200.00 per week. Call Jean Hammer, 5180. @ pyr VOT eat econ Did you know that there’s something new inside the Inside?
