INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / JANUARY 16, 1990 Douglas College Royals Women’s Basketball team attended the S.A.LT. Invitational in Calgary this weekend. The tournament fea- tured three nationally ranked women’s teams: #4 ranked S.A.LT. #5 ranked Red Deer #7 ranked Royals, as well as a senior women’s team from Calgary comprised of ex-col- lege and U. of Calgary varsity players. Royals met Grant MacEwan Col- lege of Edmonton in the 1st round, and defeated them 80 - 60 with Crys- tal Caldwell scoring 21 and Lorraine Denis 16 for Douglas. Athletic Update Second round matched #7 ranked Royals with #5 ranked Red Deer. Royals led throughout the con- test by up to 11 points, before Red Deer stormed back to tie the game in the final 2 minutes, 71 all. After ex- changing hoops to tie again. at 73, Royals went to the line to shoot the one plus one, missed, but had Carrie Carlsen put the rebound back for a 75 - 73 lead. Royals stole the ball from Red Deer with 30 seconds left and ran out the clock. Crystal Caldwell led with 33 points and Lor- raine Denis with 17. The final game saw Royals meet Calgary Molson Sr. Womens, who had earlier defeated S.A.LT. in the briefs CALENDAR REVISIONS 1990-91 Calendar revisions are due no later than Jan 31. Lorraine Denis lead Royals with 14 points, with Caldwell adding 10. Crystal Caldwell was named to the tournament All-Star team. Royal Classic Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament - December 28-29-30/89 Twenty-two basketball games were played at Douglas College during the last weekend of Decem- ber and although the spectator com- ponent was low, the competition was tremendous. The Douglas women defeated Spokane Falls (62-60) in their first game and then lost the next two games to Clackamas (99-47) and Ed- monds (87-79) to finish fourth. The Douglas men lost their opener (69-63) to Mt. Royal and went on to win the consolation side by defeating Cariboo (95-67) and Fraser Valley College (68-62). Clackamas defeated North Idaho (79-55) to win the women’s division. S.A.LT. romped to a 98-85 vic- tory over Everett to win the men’s side. Lorraine Denis and Ted Vander- wal from Douglas College were named to the All-Star team with the MVP honours going to Angela Hewlett from Clackamas and Peter Wright from S.A.LT. A special thank you to the Bookstore and the Alumni Associa- tion for donating Player-of-the- Game Awards.
