INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / FEBRUARY 13, 1990 Men’s Volleyball The Royals Men’s Volleyball team played a very good tourna- ment February 3 and 4 at Mt. Royal College in Calgary. After losing their first match to Mt. Royal Col- lege 10-15, 12-15, they then went on to beat a Calgary club team 15-13, 15-10. They next met S.A.LT. ina close five-game match winning, 9- 15, 15-12, 15-10, 12-15, 17-15 to take the bronze medal. Kal Heywood, Dan Kamke and Mike Moy of Douglas were named game stars with Mike Moy taking an All Star Award. The Royals also played Mt. Royal College in exhibition, losing a close match 14-16, 15-2, 16-17. Women’s Volleyball The Royals Women’s Volleyball team travelled to Calgary for an 8- team tournament at S.A.1.T. February 2-4. The Royals started well, winning the first two of three matches in the round robin, finish- ing in second place. They were then pitted against the first-place team from the other pool, U. of Cal- gary, and lost 15-6, 15-5, 15-5. In the Bronze Medal game the Royals lost to Mt. Royal 15-5, 15-6, 15-5. Sue Sharp of Douglas was selected as an all-star. The top four teams in the tournament were: U. of Calgary Alumni U. of Calgary Juveniles Mt. Royal Douglas College Women’s Basketball The Women’s Basketball team swept two league games the Feb. 2- 4 weekend, downing VCC by 14 points and Fraser Valley by 17. In the Friday match-up with VCC, the Royals came out quickly with a full court press that gave them a 7-0 lead that was built up to a 40-26 ad- Athletics Update scored equally in the second period as the Royals finished with a 66-52 victory. Lorraine Denis led Douglas with 20 points, followed by Crystal Caldwell with 15 and Jana Gibson with 10. Saturday night the Royals were out to avenge an earlier loss to Fraser Valley, and again started strong. After trading baskets to knot at 10-10, the Royals broke it open to pull away 34-14, before set- tling for a 41-29 lead at the half. The Royals controlled the play in the second period as Fraser Valley went to a zone and could not pressure the ball. Final score was 77-60 for Douglas with Crystal Caldwell lead- ing with 24, Lorraine Denis with 21, and Carol Stanford with 10. Jana Gibson and Shiela Vegraiff were defensive standouts for the Royals. The half-time score was 37-56 for VCC and the final score was 95-84 for VCC. High scorers on the Royals team were Ted Vanderwal with 18 and Dave Gill with 16. On February 3 the Royals played a close match with Fraser Valley. At the half Fraser Val- ley held the lead with 33-32, but the Royals pulled ahead to win 58- 52. Fred Apolinario scored 19 points and 4 assists, and Ted Vanderwal had 14 points and 8 rebounds.
