Centre for Enterprise Development cont... "To succeed today one must have a plan and know some basic rules for operating a small business.” "The academic structure teaches you how to function in a large business," says McMullin "but not as your own boss." Paying Bills a Major Concern While most business managers and accountants are concerned with ratio analysis and other such figures, the small business person "is concerned _about paying his bills." "Probably the most neglected financial report by business academics is the cash-flow statement," explains McMullin. "Most accounting courses focus on skills for employees of large businesses and not the concerns of the employer of a small one." Part of the Centre's time is spent matching clients with investors. McMullin emphasizes the Centre does not act as a brokerage, but attempts to match entrepreneurs with investors who have specific talents and/or resources. In instances where an arrangement occurs, the Centre charges a small service fee. Women, not surprisingly, have taken to the Centre's services, but were not thrilled by a seminar for women only. Says McMullin: "The women did not want to be treated differently than the men. Now the seminars are held strictly for anyone who wants to be an entrepre- neur." Almost 40% of the people in attendance are women. Centre Aiming for Self-sufficiency McMullin says funding for the Centre's second year has been secured but the Centre is aiming for self-sufficiency by offering more services. The society serves the entire Lower Mainland from its central location at Douglas College in New Westminster. Extensive ten-week "How to" courses geared towards the potential entrepreneur, dealing with topics such as how to start a small business and bookkeeping for a small business will be offered in late September.
