San DOUGLAS COLLEGE ARCHIVES Royal City Hosts Big Expo Update Expo 86's two biggest promoters will be in the Royal City on Wednesday, Jan. 15 to provide an update on the world's fair. Tourism Minister Claude Richmond and Expo '86 Chairman Jim Pattison will team up with Royal City '86 Chairman Col. Bill McKinney and Mayor Tom Baker for an informative free public meeting starting with a public reception at 6:30 P.M. in the Douglas College Theatre. Participants will have an opportunity to find out the latest developments with Expo and New Westminster's own exciting program of events for Royal City '86. "We are very pleased and honored to host the Hon. Claude Richmond and Jim Pattison," says Royal City '86 Chairman McKinney. "This will be an excellent opportunity to find out more about the World's Fair and how it, combined with Sky Train, will make a positive impact on New Westminster now and in future years." New Westminster Will be Brought to Life McKinney predicts thousands of tourists will flood into New Westminster on Sky Train and will be greeted with a wide variey of things to do and see. "Business people are already starting to reap the benefits of Sky Train and next summer within a three-block radius of the Eighth Street Station tourists will be able to take in everything from a superb vintage car show - Transporama to the futuristic Ideafest Space Station at Douglas College. "These two events alone, combined with some of New Westminster's long standing attractions like Irving House, the Samson V and events like the Hyack Festival which will be enlarged, will bring the city to life," says McKinney. McKinney noted New Westminster also has a growing Bed and Breakfast Registry and the 250-site New Westminster Recreational Park Uae and Ride to assist with accommodation and plans for a bus shuttle to tie the whole program together. "We have an edge over other communities with Sky Train and we must capitalize on it to make 1986 a banner year for New Westminster," he concluded. In addition to the formal program, displays will be set up promoting Royal City '86, the Chamber of Commerce, Ideafest, New Westminster Recreational Vehicle Park and Ride, Expo '86 and more. Mr. Munchies at the Station will provide free refreshments and nibbles for the public reception from 6:30 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. The formal program winds up at 8:00 P.M. with a question and answer period. The Douglas College Theatre accommodates 350 people and seating will be on a first come basis. For more information call Royal City '86 at | 524-4996, | Cosmic Ball Set New Westminster's Expo Committee, Royal City '86, will host a Gala Cosmic Benefit Ball on Saturday, January 18 at Douglas College. The semi-formal night will include a concert of space-age music, a gourmet dinner and dance to run from 6:00 P.M. to Midnight. The event will be on a "futuristic" theme to compliment one of next year's leading attractions for New Westminster - the Space Station, Ideafest. Alan Clapp, creator of this high-tech show to be held at Douglas College will attend in addition to special guest Expo '86 Commissioner General Patrick Reid and Mrs. Reid.
