GALA OPENING CELEBRATES FRASER The “Mighty Fraser” will overflow its banks in a wash of art, music and lore in the opening of an art exhibition celebrating the Fraser River. “The Fraser River Show” includes 85 artists displaying 175 works throughout three locations. Varied styles and media, from watercolour to three-dimensional installation, provide a rich range of perspectives on the river theme. The public is invited to attend the gala opening of “The Fraser River Show” at 8:30 p.m. October |, in the Douglas College Performance Theatre Gallery. Launching the art exhibition will be legendary steamboat Captain William “King of the River" Irving, played by local historian Archie Miller. The event will be presided over by Mayor Tom Baker and Douglas College President Bill Day. And B.C. heritage music duo “Fresh Water” from Port Moody will perform traditional river songs from the province's early days. “Our aim is to provide the community with an enhanced view of the Fraser River and a vivid art appreciation experience,” says exhibition organizer Sandra Shaw. Among the work will be paintings by the late William Sclater, beloved teacher and well-known painter of the Lower Mainland. © Shaw says her work as organizer of the show has been “an exhilarating experience”. “There has been a tremendous response from the artistic community. The works represent a wide variety of moods and vistas, finely and sensitively rende- red.” Many of the works will be offered for sale. Community organizations, businesses, and the public are urged to view the art and take advantage of this unique opportunity to purchase “a piece of the Fraser”. “The Fraser River Show" will open at 6:00 p.m. October | and will run through October 31 at three exhibition locations: the Douglas College Performance Theatre Foyer Gallery, the New Westminster Public Library Gallery, and the New Westminster Arts Council “Gallery in the Park” at Centennial Lodge in Queen's Park. The opening celebrations begin at 8:30 p.m. in the Douglas College Performance Theatre Foyer, 700 Royal Avenue New Westminster. Refreshments will be available and admission is free.
