FIRST WIN FOR D.C, FIRS SOCCER TEAM The Douglas College Soccer team registered its first victory of the season ‘ on Sunday, 19th October, beating BCIT 1-0. After the heavy rains of the previous few days it was thought that the game would have to be cancelled but, thanks to the good connections the College has made thro’ Ken Moore's office, the sun came out at the kick off, and stayed out for most of the game. Most of the games in the Lower Mainland had been cancelled, and a few frantic phone calls were made prior to the kick off in order to field a full team. Various excuses, such as power failures, mothers forgetting to wake up players, hangovers, etc., did little to enhance a feeling of togetherness and enthusiasm, i The first half of the game belonged to BCIT, who missed numerous good chances and also the great goaltending of Glenn Whittington (no relation to Dick--even tho he has bells in his head--English joke!) kept the score at 0-0. However, after a few words of advice, a few blasphemies, and a prayer or two, D.C. took the initiative in the second half. Long through balls down the middle were the answer, and Bruceour centre forward cashed in on a third attempt to open the scoring. Bruce should have scored three but over-enthusiasm and his boots on the wrong feet, thwarted his earlier attempts. BCIT were awarded a penalty after Fred Powell attempted to climb on opposing forward's back. (They later kissed and made up.) The penalty kick was taken, a pregnant silence dropping over the thousands (five) of spectators at the field. The penalty was taken and much to everyone's surprise, including Glenn's, the ball was shot straight at his chest. No one moved for a good thirty seconds before it was realised what had happened. The gods were with us and the team hung on to the one goal lead. A good game was played by everyone, especially Buch Eakins, Glenn Whittington, Andy Winterhoff, Steve Wood, Fred Powell, and Ray Smith playing on the wing for the first time. If our finishing was a little stronger we could have had four or five goals in the second half. And--as the actress said to the bishop -- “keep it up lads"!!! Af, 2 Le rae Chris Johnson Pa /0
