Wells July 7, 1992 The Douglas College Newsletter Dealing with harassment Douglas College’s new Sexual and Per- sonal Harassment Policy is now in place to deal with these two growing social concerns. Designed for both employees and stu- dents, the policy includes procedures to deal with harassment complaints and educational provisions to make people more aware of the issues. Policy writer Mia Gordon said the policy is needed to promote understanding of diver- sity at Douglas College and to provide clear procedures to meet the College’s legal and ethical responsibilities. "We are seeing an increase in reported harassment incidents both internationally and in Canada," said Gordon. "One of the major responsibilities of the College is to make a clear statement of what we will not tolerate as we strive to maintain a pos- itive learning and working environment. It was important to clarify our position and set up an educational policy." Recent statistics and incidents back up the need to deal with harassment issues. In the aftermath of the Clarence Thomas- Anita Hill hearings last fall, a U.S. poll found that 34 percent of women surveyed had experienced some level of sexual harassment at work.
