INside QUOTE of the MONTH ® You can tell a lot about people by the amount of room they give you on the road. ” Arnie Driver, Douglas College printer and long distance cyclist, 1994 August 2, 1994 The Douglas College Newsletter Kids in the New Westminster Police Service Summer Soccer School take a break at Mercer Stadium with coach and Constable Julian Knight (above, right). Kids, police find common ground on soccer field Kids in New Westminster are learning to see police officers first as people, then as coaches, and then as cops. About 300 kids aged 6 to 12 years are taking part in this summer’s New Westminster Police Service Summer Soccer School. Several of the eleven constables who coach kids have taken the Level One Theory coaching course offered through the Douglas College Sports Institute and taught by Programmer Chris Johnson. The soccer school is a way to introduce kids to police officers, says Sergeant Steve Young of the New Westminster Police Service. “Kids get to see them as people instead of as police, and the officers learn how to deal better with kids, how to keep them busy and active. They learn how to teach constructively and to know what levels the kids can reach,” says Young. Constable Julian Knight took the Level One course, and he says he’d be lost without it. “What Chris showed us was a non-conventional method of teaching, with lots of variety. I don’t have a great soccer background, but I pick out games from his book and try them out, and they all work. It’s more fun than push-ups and sit-ups. I’ve been able to give the kids a sense of fun, and build real friendships with them.” Kids, police continued on page 2 Feedback wanted for Adult Special Education How effectively is Douglas College serving students with a disability and what can we do better? All College employees can help answer those questions by taking a moment to complete the Adult Special Education (ASE) Policy Questionnaire. The survey will be distributed in the third week of August and should be returned to Institutional Research as soon as possible. Results from the questionnaire will be used by the ASE Policy Implementation Committee as it prepares recommendations for improvements in ASE service. The committee has already conducted a survey of students and expects to complete its report by January, 1995. Questions in the forthcoming survey will provide the committee with feedback about existing College procedures, employee awareness of ASE issues, and whether current levels of ASE training for employees are adequate.
