ATHLETIC UPDATE

 

HOCKEY: The Royals tied
BCIT 5-5 Saturday, Jan. 21 at
Port Moody Arena, in a fast-
skating, hard-hitting game with
few penalties. The Royals led 2-
1 in the first, 4-2 after the
second, and almost lost the
game in the third, as BCIT
pulled ahead 5-4. Al Wall
scored his second goal of the
game with 2:12 left to tie the
score. Single goals came from
Glen Bulawka, Frank Pakodzy,
and Shawn Hokanson.

VOLLEYBALL: The
women’s team played the #2
ranked Red Deer College
Queens on Saturday, Jan. 21.
Douglas lost 3-0, with scores of
15-7, 15-5, 15-13. Although the
scores in the first game seem a
bit one-sided, they were by no
means any indication of the type
of play. The Royals played a
very hard and intense match.

BADMINTON: The Douglas
College Badminton team par-
ticipated in the 3rd tournament
of the season held at BCIT.
Douglas finished in 3rd place,
behind a very strong Malaspina
team and the host BCIT team.

Paul Meyer, despite an injured
ankle, had an excellent tourna-
ment, winning both his singles
matches and one out of two
mixed doubles matches. A good
performance was also put forth
by rookie Kelley Wong, who
won three matches - singles,
doubles and mixed doubles -
thus showing her versatility.
The next tournament will be
held at Douglas College on Feb.
18., beginning at 9:30 am.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:

UBC JV’s at Douglas College,
Jan. 21. Half-time score: 35-29
for Douglas. Final Score: 75-70
for Douglas. Andrea Jackson
scored 25 points. Claudia
Zamprogno led in offensive
rebounds, and Andrea Jackson
led in defensive rebounds.

 

MEN’S BASKETBALL:
Douglas at Shoreline Com-
munity College, Jan. 21.
Half-time score: 47-43 for
Shoreline. Final score: 94-90
for Douglas. League Standing:
12-11 in exhibition play. Phil
Tapley scored 27 points, Tracey
Holloman 21 points, and Sean
Beasley 16 points. Missing
were Glen Cote and Willis Par-
nell.

Jan. 20. Half-time score: 42-30
for Douglas. Final score: 75-74
for Douglas. League standing:
11-11 in exhibition play, 4-2 in
league play. Phil Tapley scored
14 points, Chris Schriek 13
points, Glen Cote 13 points.
Rory Brown hit a 2-pointer to
edge the Capilano Blues. Willis
Parnell received a hairline frac-
ture to the thumb and will be off
for two weeks.
