INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / JULY 25, 1989 New Bursary for Adult Basic Education Students Adult Basic Education students at Douglas College will soon benefit from the establishment of the Gail Smythe Memorial Bursary. The Gail Smythe Memorial Bur- sary was established by her family to honour her memory and her com- mitment to Adult Basic Education. Gail enjoyed an active career as an educator. She taught Adult Basic Education at Douglas and Kwantlen Colleges and is a past president of the B.C. Primary Teachers’ Association. A reading specialist, Gail is widely recog- nized as a pioneer in the fields of adult literacy, adult education and primary education. Gail firmly believed that adult education students required the best education the system had to offer and she worked hard to ensure their needs were addressed. Gillies Mal- narich, Gail’s friend and colleague, noted that “she spoke eloquently on behalf of those individuals whose lack of education barred them from full and informed participation in social life.””, Malnarich remembers Gail as ‘‘a teacher’s teacher - some- one not afraid to be the lone voice.” Gail’s links to Douglas College were not limited to her experience as an adult basic education instruc- tor. Both of her daughters also attended Douglas College. Income from the Gail Smythe Memorial Bursary endowment will be awarded as one or more bur- saries to students enrolled in the Developmental Studies program who demonstrate good scholastic ability and who have need of monetary assistance.
