With half of the summer over, you ‘ve probably had your vacation or are look- ing forward to enjoying the sun which never arrived in July. Well here is some news to take with you if you held out for an August holiday. Speaking of vacations... Bill Day recently returned from a five-day trek along the West Coast Trail with his two sons. From his perspective it was a "life-time experience". Su Anderson (Ship- ping and Receiving) just came back from the "Iand-down-under". Su will be getting married on August 14th and leaving again for Australia in September. Pat Floyd (Thomas Haney Centre) spent his two-week vacation travelling to Denmark, Germany and France. Geoff Campbell (Systems and Computing) travelled with his family down to Disneyland and Susan Greffard (also from Systems) spent her vacation in England. New kids on the block... Three Douglas College employees have had additions to their families. Faculty members Meg Stainsby and Lin Langley, both from the English and Communications Department had baby girls. Rose Wilson (Music department) had a baby boy. Congratulations! Familiar face .... new job Gisela Roth has been appointed as Gil- lies Malnarich’s new assistant. She will be coordinating the various faculty develop- ment workshops. Welcome to Laurie Smith in the Registrar's Office. Laurie has been hired as a systems analyst to sup- port the new computing systems now in place in that office. AwtNE Happy Birthday! Three Douglas College employees will be celebrating their birthdays on Friday, August 13th, Connie Doherty - Student Services, Marilyn Houlihan - DCSS, and Jean Easton - Facilities. Cathleen gets published... Cathleen Smith, Early Childhood Education Instructor, has written a chap- ter in a book entitled Children with Special Needs - Family, Culture and Society. Cathleen’s chapter, Cultural Sensitivity in Working with Children and Families, includes an interesting case study about a Chilean refugee and her two sons, one of whom is multi-handi- capped. The book, published by Harcourt Brace Tovanovich, is available in the Book- store. Recently, Cathleen was asked to speak about her video Making Friends: Programming for Friendships at the An- nual General Meeting of the Simon Fraser Society for Community Living. Fried today, Gone tomorrow... High-technology came to the New West campus two weeks ago in the form of a french fry vending machine coined "Spud Stop". After various staff members tried out the processed fries, the machine was quietly removed. Have problems?....Call Christine What do you do when someone in a 375- pound motorized wheelchair gets a flat tire? Call Christine Unterthiner from Facilities. Recently, a group of students from Surrey Variety Child Centre came through on a tour and one of them blew a tire on his motorized wheelchair. Rather than wait three hours for a company technician to come to the College, Christine loaded him and his wheelchair aboard an electric pallet jack and ““@ ered him safe, sound and grateful to the Centre’s van.
