INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / AUGUST 7, 1990 it back and fasten your seat- belts. At Open House ’90, a Douglas College Computer Technician hopes to take you ona musical and visual journey into the latest realm of computer technol- ogy. Darryl Karleen, a computer technician in the Systems and Com- puting department, is fine tuning a proposal to combine computer animated graphics and computer generated music to produce a "visual and musical ex- perience" for visitors at Open House ’90. “A music board allows you to use the computer as a 10 channel synthesizer,” says Karleen. "We can program in songs and then play them back." Adding a graphics element to the musical com- ponent will further enhance the quality of the exhibit. "The graphics program is called "Animator"," Kar- leen explains. "It will scan or digitize images onto the screen in sync with the music." With the final plans still in the works, Karleen says that the size and magnitude of the display will depend on how much help he can muster up from the rest of the College. "I’m hoping to work with Instructional Media Ser- vices, the Music Department and the Public Informa- tion Office," he says. "What Id like to do is have a large presentation area — maybe a classroom blackened out," says Kar- leen. "We'll beam the computer against the wall, and then let in groups of 20 people at a time to watch and listen." Karleen says the exhibit will not only entertain visitors by com- puter wizardry, but will also visually showcase the whole Col- lege. "If we get fancy,” says Karleen, "we can take videos of the College and then project two images simultaneously with the music.” "We're not going to compete with the type of presentation the Planetarium puts on, but it will be a smaller scale version of that type of show." Karleen says he is willing to put in as much effort as necessary to make the System’s exhibit extra spe- cial. “This is something I’ve always been interested | in," he says. "The more I learn about it the better." When asked what visitors to Open House ’90 will think of the combination of music, graphics and high technology, Karleen has only one thing to say. "It’s going to blow their minds." Karleen’s proposal will be discussed at the next Open House Committee meeting in mid-August. @ Name: Mark Coumont Position at Douglas College: Micro-Computer Technician Scope of duties: Maintain and repair ricro-computers and operate mini-computers.
