TO: FROM: RE: A. MEMORANDUM February 18, 1988. DOUGLAS COLLEGE BOARD W. L. DAY PRESIDENT'S REPORT External Matters - Municipal The College has had a letter from Mr. George Flanagan, Chairman of the Board, B.C. Enterprise Corporation, stating that we should hear from them in approximately a month regarding the final settlement of the College claim for additional permanent parking in downtown New Westminster. I attended an invitational meeting of the Business Council of B.C. today, to hear a presentation on current developments in communications technology, and their possible impact on education. In addition, the impact of Bill 19, and current concerns regarding the labour relations climate in B.C., were disccused. External Matters - Education The College has had a request from the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology for assistance in developing and accrediting certain courses and programs. This institution is in many respects, a community college, operated by and for the B.C. Native population. At the request of the Council of Principals and BCAC, I am currently involved in work on papers to be addressed to government, relating to support of non credit programs, the need for a B.C. training policy, the matter of opportunity for part-time students, and issues regarding the provision of literacy programs to the adult population. The Provincial "Infotech" Committee is now meeting regularly. As a result of its work, it is likely that a newsletter will be in regular publication before summer, for the interest of faculty throughout the province. In all likelihood, there will also be a computer conferencing system in place by the end of the next academic year. An electronic mail system linking ali colleges and institutes will also be in operation by May as a result of work commenced last year through the Council of Principals. I have met with the Association of B.C. School Superintendents, regarding the Council of Principals' submission to the Commissioner of Education. As a result of that meeting, regular liaison will be set up with them. pene
