American Apparel May be Dying By Maria Asselin-Roy, Staff Reporter American Apparel) began making basic t-shirts and selling them out of his dorm room. When people began taking an interest to the clothing and Charney sold the brand to manufacturers, American Apparel stores opened. At first, people thought of the clothing as trendy and fashionable. Now the stores seem to be emptier than ever. The main reason for this? People are moving on from the “trendy” bright clothing and are perhaps moving on to another cultural trend, and people are also reportedly getting a little sick of their advertising. Over the past ten years, the popular clothing company has portrayed images of young people typically dressed in bright spandex. When American Apparel transformed from an unknown anti-brand company to a massive multinational chain, their ads changed from natural images to “partied out hipsters.” (American Apparel being known as a symbol and icon of hipsterdom, as reported from Douglas Haddow, author of the article Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilization) The advertising that is done for American Apparel is sexually explicit and usually consists of slender Caucasian females. One of the ads included an actual porn star, and another popular one is Don Charney himself lying [ the 1990’s, Dov Charney (the founder of across a bed in his underwear. A couple of former employees have also filed sexual harassment suits against Charney, claiming he is “disrespectful to women.” Another reason for the downfall of American Apparel is that much of the company’s spending is devoted to hiring staff that “fits the company’s image.” American Apparel is known for having staff that pretty much represent the products being sold. There have even been a few cases of American Apparel being sued due to not hiring a perfectly qualified person because this person did not display the particular style the company is portraying. Due to these reasons, American Apparel currently has a recorded debt of 120.3 million dollars earlier this year. The company was given an extension until November 15" so that they could file financial and sales results and possibly save the company from becoming bankrupt and avoid being taken off the New York Stock Exchange.
