Douglas fifth in international play

The Douglas College di-
vision one rugby team com-
peted in the International
Invitational Rugby Tourna-
ment in Victoria March 14

and 15.
Despite the closeness of,
competition Douglas  fi-

nished in fifth place against

some very high calibre of
play.

Six teams competed in
| the tournament: England's
Cambridge University, Uni-

versity of Victoria, Univer-
sity of Southern California,
| University of British Colum-
_ bia, New Zealand’s Lincoln’
College, and Douglas.
Cambridge took first
place as they defeated the
host UVic. 35-7 in the final.

“Anybody could have
i won the tournament on any
given day,’’ stated Douglas
coach Gert van Niekerk. ‘‘It
was that close.’’

_ Niekerk emphasized his
| feelings by stating that

 

Cambridge had also lost to
fourth place U.B.C. 19-12
and runner-up UVIC.: were

blown out of one game 19-0
by third place Licoln Col-
lege.

Douglas played three
games and finished with
one win and two losses.
They defeated U.S.C. 17-16
and lost to Lincoln College
13-9 and UVic 13-6.

Douglas came one play
away from capturing fourth
spot. With just under a
minute to play in the Lin-
coln College match one of
the Douglas players was
tackled inches from the goal
line. During a two on one,
Dave Jagger, elected to
dummy (fake) instead of
passing to teammate Terry
McMullen and was subse-
quently stopped by the lone
Lincoln defender. If Doug-
las had scored on that play
they would have been gua-
ranteed a fourth place fi-
nish.
