Jackie, who worked in the Purchasing Department, passed away August 28 after a fatal car crash. Briefly Silent furniture auction at Library Due to renovations and wall construction in the library, the A/V dept. has a custom Japanese-style Shogi screen up for bids. This is a fine crafted, three- panel screen constructed of local silver birch. The bidding starts at $200, and will be open to the College community up until the end of September. If you would like to inspect the item, you can visit the A/V department during library hours. Masterful guy Yoshiyuki Takano of the Centre for International Education received his MA in Counselling Psychology from Trinity Western University this summer. College instructors published Department of Philosophy and Humanities’ Leonard Angel's article Zeno’ Arrow, Newton’s Mechanics, and Bell’s Inequalities linking ancient Greece, classical physics and quantum physics, appeared as the first article in The British Journal for the Philosophy of Science in June of this year. Bruce Landon, Psychology instructor, has a chapter in a recently published book. It was with great sadness that the Douglas College community learned of the sudden passing of Jackie Chudy, who worked in the Purchasing Department. Jackie was in Winnipeg to attend her grandmother's funeral when she was involved in a fatal automobile accident on Wednesday August 28, 2002. She is survived by her 17-month-old son Winston. CSD changes Libby Russell of Student Development says that there’s never a dull moment around the Centre for Students with Disabilities (CSD). Vivian Hirschen, Learning Specialist instructor, is retiring after 10 years at the College. Pat Mossman, Photography exhibit focuses on threat from nuclear weapons Hiroshima Nagasaki and Since, an exhibition of photographs on the threat from nuclear weapons, will be on display in the New Westminster Campus Library from September 9 to 20. Asa closing to the exhibition, the Douglas Students Union, Douglas College Faculty Association and the Library are hosting a popular education social in the Douglas Room on September 20 from 4- 9pm. In the tradition of the Video Cafe, videos will be screened, followed by discussion. The theme of the evening follows the lead of the photo exhibition — nuclear war and the links of Advertising policy now on-line globalization and war through policies of the IMF/World Bank. A no- host bar will be available. Look for posters at the beginning of the Fall semester to get the details of videos that will screen. The new Advertising Policy (policy A15.01.01), is now available on-line at www.douglas.bc.ca (choose Policies from the Quick List, and then Administration). This policy, which covers everything from advertising in College publications and public spaces to personal sales and promotional activities, will be reviewed by the Advertising Policy Task Group one year after implementation. who was the faculty coordinator of New Directions has worked in the CSD for about nine years, and is taking a leave of absence to continue her studies in neurol- psychology. Walk for Habitat Early Childhood Education instructor Diana Stewart encourages College employees to take part in the 11th Annual Ismaili walk for Habitat for Humanity. Diana’s husband works with Habitat for Humanity, which builds homes for purchase at cost for needy families, who also help in the building of their own home and those of others. The walk takes place Sunday, September 8 at Lumberman’s Arch in Stanley Park, and begins at 9:30am with a pledge- donation submission, with the walk starting at 12pm. Persian Gulf move Bob Cowin of Institutional Research reports that Laura Toerper has left Institutional Research to move to Qatar in the Persian Gulf. Her husband has been hired for a three-year term by the College of the North Atlantic, the Newfoundland college system which won the contract to establish a community college in Qatar. Youth career fair The CAVE Youth Employment Centre, associated with Centre 2000, is holding a Career Fair on September 18, 2-5 pm at 202-4250 Kingsway, Burnaby. Over 15 companies will be in attendance collecting resumes, offering information on career paths within their companies, and discussing training and internship/mentorship opportunities. In Commerce and Business, Michelle Leong is the new Program Assistant I for Co-op Education, replacing Mary Hatch who moves from sub to permanent as Publications & Documentation Specialist in Systems; and Chrissy Lundeberg moves from auxiliary to regular part- time as Co-op Education Placement Officer at the David Lam Campus.
