Change seems to happen so quickly now that we don’t have much time to reflect, so take a moment to review some of last year’s happenings at Douglas College. Employees and students accomplished a lot in 1995. Here’s a sample. January Students from the College of Commerce, Tourism and Catering in Hungary and Douglas College participated in an international marketing course pitting teams of Douglas College students against each other and their Hungarian counterparts...English and Creative Writing instructor Susan McCaslin published her first children’s book called Thinking About God...the Safe Walk program sought more volunteers. February College restructuring resulted in six divisions being trimmed down to four, as the recommendations of the Task Force for Organizational Restructuring were implemented...world renowned Canadian classical guitarist Norbert Kraft visited the Performing Arts Theatre for the Scholarship Benefit Concert...writer The holiday season was made a little brighter for 16 New Westminster families by employees of Douglas College. Staff, faculty and administrators worked together to gather food, gifts, and cash for turkey vouchers for families in the community who found themselves in need over Christmas. The drive was organized by the Accounting Department’s Vye Flindall working with Constable Mike Blackstock of the New Westminster Police Service. Ten College departments participated, and they donated so much that the Police Service had to send three minivans and five community volunteers to deliver all the groceries and gifts to the families. The volunteers are holding donated gingerbread houses and a bicycle for a lucky child. life of Douglas College Evelyn Lau appeared in the WomenSpeak series...College President Bill Day spoke at a provincial seminar on the Axworthy Paper on social and education issues. March Douglas College Theatre presented Moo, a black comedy by Vancouver playwright Sally Clark and The Good Woman of Setzuan by Bertolt Brecht...Luciano Anjos joined the College as Labour Relations Manager in the Personnel Department...Dave Dalcanale, Douglas College Women’s Volleyball Coach, was named BCCAA Coach of the continued on page 5
