DOUGLAS COLLEGE ee ARCHIVES - to ensure that institutions are able to cope with increasing levels of demand for the training and retraining of highly qualified manpower ; - to ensure that a strong core of liberal arts and humanities programming is preserved in our universities; and ~- to ensure that provision is made for the integration of new technologies within the postsecondary education sector. "Education systems are experiencing the same degree of stress that is being felt in other sectors of Canadian society," stated Mr. Ouellet. "We are nonetheless determined to help our institutions make the changes required to respond to the new and emerging needs of an increasingly technological society. Guided by the set of priorities we have established and working in concert with all those who have a stake in ensuring the quality and relevance of education and training programs, we believe that our postsecondary education systems will continue to play a key role in preparing Canadians for active and meaningful participation in society." Mr. Ouellet concluded by stating that this ministerial statement is the first in a series on issues facing postsecondary education in Canada which the Council will release in the fall of each year. = Sf For further information, contact Boyd Pelley CMEC (416) 964-2551
