December 1999 The Douglas College Newsletter m New Westminster Campus, David Lam Campus & Thomas Haney Campus Ds Douglas College Holiday celebration kicks off anniversary The College’s 30th anniversary is fast approaching, with just a few weeks left until the end of the year. To kick-start the festivities, the President’s Office and the 30° Anniversary Committee is making this year’s Douglas College Holiday Celebration a special launching point for a year of special activities. In addition to the snacks, no-host bar and the chance to celebrate with your colleagues, a photo collection depicting College events and employee life from the past 30 years will be on display, as well as a calendar of events for next year. The highlight of the event, however, is the group photograph on the concourse steps. It’s been almost 16 years since the last (only partial) group photograph was taken, and we can’t think of a better way to commemorate our 30 years than with a portrait of the College community. Copies will be available for all interested participants in the new year. The Celebration will be held December 16, 4-6pm in the upper cafeteria at the New Westminster Campus. Please assemble in the concourse at 4pm for the group photograph. Golf team among first Canadians accepted into US association The Douglas College golf team has just been approved for membership in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC), the first time the Association has accepted a Canadian team into their conference. Our team, along with Camosun College which was also accepted, will join groups from Washington for the 2000 season. “The level of competition is going to be excellent,” says team coach and College instructor Gert Van Niekerk. “It’s a much higher calibre than we're used to.” The College team recently took second place in the 1999 BC College/Universities Golf League. Student success has always been the main objective of First Nations Services at Douglas College, and it remains a primary goal for new First Nations Services Coordinator Dave Seaweed. “My main focus is the students,” he says. “They've told me that they want to bea part of things, not separate from the rest of the College, so we're working on ways to be an all-inclusive area.” Seaweed is no stranger to Douglas College. He’s been a student, a building service worker, a departmental assistant in Student Services, Student Council president, Alumni president and mailroom clerk. His present job as First Nations Coordinator keeps him busy, but he also finds time to act asa BCGEU shop steward and staff representative on the Education Council. “IT know alot of people at the College and I know how things work in the institutional environment,” he says. “Hopefully my experiences can help the students while they are here.” Seaweed is also working on student empowerment, Bus rider alert from Translink acting as a resource for students but encouraging them to do things on their own to build self-esteem. He also encourages them to explore options available to them in the College, such as academic advice and counselling. “T value the expertise we have here,” he says. “I’m comfortable sending students to other areas of the College because I know they'll be in good hands.” Seaweed invites everyone to drop by the Centre (room 4830) and see what’s going on. He can be reached at 527-5565. Asa result of SkyTrain construction, the Patullo Bridge off-ramp to northbound Columbia Street is now closed.
