More parking, more classrooms ior Sepiember Douglas College’s physical plant is expanding. The crane perched atop the growing concrete structure on Carnarvon Street, just south of the New Westminster campus, represents about 265 more parking spaces for use by College students. The building, to be completed by September 1995, is a mix of parking, retail, and residential space. The additional parking is coming just in time to alleviate some of the space pressure in the existing parkade and on the streets around the campus, and College Bursar Peter Greenwood says safety measures in the new parkade are extensive. < SO en es Qa “We’re trying to consider as many safety issues as possible. Most of the parking will have natural lighting. It will be well-lit, painted white, and we’re exploring the use of security cameras. There will be emergency telephones hooked up to the campus security.” ' Rather than an attendant collecting money, all drivers will access the parkade using cards, and the attendant will be constantly moving through the building to provide enhanced security, says Greenwood. The new parking is reserved exclusively for student use, and the College’s four and a half floors of parking are separate from the other floors in the new building. Faculty and staff will continue to use the existing parkade. Also new for September 1995 is new classroom and office space in the former bingo hall located just below the campus and across Victoria Street. Six new classrooms and five offices are now being finished, and will be used on a temporary basis until the Pinetree Way campus opens. With the increased foot traffic from the new space and the parkade, Greenwood anticipates much more use of two little-used College entrances, one adjacent to the loading bay off Lorne Street, and the other off Victoria Street by the Systems and Computing Department. Increased signage will be provided to highlight these entrances. & The building which contains Douglas College’s new parkade is quickly taking shape. Located south of the New Westminster campus on Carnarvon Street, the new building will provide parking spaces for about 265 students and will be operational for September.
