Ronald Reagan January 5, 1993 The Douglas College Newsletter Looking back, looking forward Here it is...a new year. The notion that time can be measured in those chunks called years seems curiously cold, because no measure of accomplishment is reflected in a number. Not only for a human life, but for a place like Douglas College, where so many people ac- complish so much. So, it seems appropriate to take a look back at what we did in that chunk of time we called 1992. Let’s start with the building itself. The Amelia Douglas Gallery opened in the new fourth floor space in April with a show featuring the quirky realist style of Christopher Woods. Community Programs & Services, the Douglas College Founda- tion and International Education moved into their new fourth floor digs in July. In May, five people came on board...the Douglas College Board. They are Robert Buzza, Gerry Sieben, Marilyn Rushton, Judith Ray and Faith Matchette, joining April appointee Grace Joe. Also in May, long-serving Board Chair Myrna Popove won the Association of Community Col- leges leadership Trustee Award for the Pacific region. Popove also became presi- dent of the Advanced Education Council of B.C. in June. The last vacant Board position was filled in November when Christine Oliver-Quist was appointed. Royals teams continued to give their op- ponents a sporting chance, but not much more. They dominated the BCCAA scene, winning the aggregate championship for the fourth time. Tim Frick led the Canadian women’s wheelchair basketball team to gold at the Paralympics in Barcelona in August, and Frick himself was awarded a Canada 125 medal (presented by Federal Justice Minister Kim Campbell) for out- standing community service in December. New Directions started up in September. The program prepares adults who have had head injuries for college-level study. The Financial Services Studies program, announced in February, vaulted into exist- ence in the fall, helped by a $1 million donation of software and expertise from Prologic Computer Corp. Another pro- gram in the news was Linda Forsythe’s tutorials for inmates at the Burnaby Correctional Centre for Women, which received excellent public response to a call for volunteer tutors.
