THE 1 Fapa... Helping students succeed At this year’s Student Orientation, Criminology student and peer tutor Alison Carr helped spread the word about the Douglas College Learning Centre. Alison is just one of the many tutors ready to assist students this semester with free sessions in study skills, math, reading comprehension, essay and research paper writing, keyboarding skills and much more. The Learning Centre will open September 15 at the New Westminster Campus, Room 2847 (527-5539) and at the David Lam Campus, Room A1030 (527-5839). = Briefly Shaking the Foundation The Douglas College Foundation has moved to one location on the third floor of the David Lam Campus. Peri-Natal Program expands Doula extraordinaire Kathie Lindstrom is happy to report that she helped colleague Susan Hammond and husband John welcome a baby girl into the world on August 11. Also welcomed by siblings Elizabeth and David, the newest Hammond, Kate, weighed in at a healthy 8lbs, 6oz. Bruce is beaming CMO Marketing Coordinator Bruce Livingstone and wife Rhonda are thrilled to announce the birth of their first child, an 8lb, 90z daughter, on August 13. Rhonda’s mom, Diane Emmerich of Psych Nursing, is also pretty excited at the appearance of her first grandchild. The final day to confirm your participation in the David Lam Campus Career Day is Friday, September 19. A key feature of the Coquitlam Town Centre Exploration Fair, the Career Day is happening on Wednesday, October 29. On the 29th, thousands of visitors will flock to the official opening ceremonies for the new Pinetree Community Centre and Secondary School. Along with the neighbouring David Lam Campus, the Evergreen Cultural Centre and Coquitlam Aquatic Centre will participate in day-long activities. The Exploration Fair will be extensively promoted within the Tri-Cities, and district schools are planning to bring students directly to the event. Stealing the scenes in an up-coming NBC network movie is the Chemistry Lab at our own David Lam Campus, now one of the hottest locations for the booming local movie business. The movie, with a conspiracy plot about cloning human spare parts, stars Elizabeth Perkins and will air in mid-October. Set your VCR! If youre interested in promo photos, call 5962. Back to school Barb Brawn will be on educational leave this year, working on her M. ED at UBC. Barb will be studying measurement, evaluation and research methodology, on a stats-focused thesis she can apply to her work when she returns to Institutional Committee is now finalizing plans to provide an opportunity for all programs, disciplines and services to promote themselves to local high-school students and adult learners. Scheduled morning and afternoon classes will be suspended for the day, while instructors with evening classes have the option of offering classes (with 7pm classes starting at 7:15 pm to allow time for classroom transition). Programs from all Douglas College campuses are encouraged to participate. Departments can offer information sessions or mini- classes (30-minute blocks). Programs and services can also staff information booths in the Atrium. Donation from Shirafuji The 1997 ESL graduation ceremony for Shirafuji students also marked the 10th year of the ESL and Homestay program between the Shirafuji Academy of Nara, Japan, and Thomas Haney Centre. Douglas College received a certificate of appreciation and a donation to the Shirifuji Academy Endowment, which provides two scholarships each year to Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows high school students intending to study at Douglas College. Bookish Admin Clerk embarks on new career Sherry Crowther (nee Chan) left her Clerk Typist job in Senior Administration three years ago to pursue Library Science at UBC. Sherry recently completed her Master’s and begins her new job this fall as a librarian at Florida International University in Miami. Gresko in good company History instructor Jacqueline Gresko spoke to the Victoria Historical Society about the Sisters of St. Ann, focusing especially on the first four Sisters of the Catholic Organization who established a school and a hospital in the early days of Victoria.
