On September 28, the Planning Institute of British Columbia held its bi-annual conference at Douglas College. New Westminster was the featured city for the two day conference, and the entire second day of the conference was devoted to the community-based economic planning activities of the Royal City Development Groun, As the Board knows, Douglas Colieae is a major partner in this enterprise. There was a great deal of interest in this approach fo economic planning and development and more than thirty infor- mation kits have been provided to municipalities and cities throughout the province, at their request. The values to the College resulting from our involvement are manifold - student projects, some of them paid; direct faculty professional con- tribution to community decision making; use of the College as 4 resource centre for community wide activities; a greatly expanded range of working relationships with the business and industrial community adjacent to the College. On October 10, the senior management group from Andres Wines in Port Moody, spent a half day at the College - partly for purposes of a management seminar and partly on a tour of the facilities and an explanation of our resources and long-term planning. The Management Group at Andres has invited us to set up a formal visit to Andres, in order to better understand the nature of their operation, and possible training needs. On October 15, I attended the Board meeting of the Downtown New Westminster Association, as a Board Member. During that meeting, I was asked by the Board to see if the College could organize a major community-wide educational event, dealing with the steeply rising rate of theft and vandalism ia the New Westminster area. ets
