It burns my tongue to say this, but the “loan forgiveness” I received last week was the most welcome thing any political body has ever done for me. After reading the Vancouver Sun last week, I called the hotline to get my “new loan” total, and quickly got through to an operator. I couldn’t believe I wasn’t on hold for ten minutes, hung up on twice, and then placed in automated purgatory before getting through. The fellow on the other end of the line was polite and helpful. As a single parent, and recent graduate of the Print Futures Program here at Douglas, I am currently carrying the better part of $15,000 in student loans. I had some savings and some stocks that I put towards my first semester and towards my living expenses, but my courseload precluded me from working. After this week, my new bal- ance is closer to $9,000. That’s two fifths of my total owing. For a five-semester pro- gram, I now owe under $2,000 per semester. That includes living, school, bills, and all other expenses. In my opinion, that’s pretty reasonable for post secondary education. And I hate to say it, but it looks like I have the BC Liberals to thank for it. Office of the Registrar and Student Awards 780.492.3113 Wwww.registrar.ualberta.ca the Other Press is now hiring!
