DOUGLAS COLLEGE ADULT SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS DOUGLAS COLLEGE ARCHIVES CONSUMER AND JOB PREPARATION FOR ADULTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS | This program teaches a variety of skills through individual and group work. Each course in this program is designed and taught so that students | will acquire skills which will be useful in their daily lives. Each | student has an individual learning contract which specifies where the skills will be used. BASIC OCCUPATIONAL EDUCATION - FOOD SERVICES The Food Services training program is designed to prepare students with special needs for competitive employment in the Food Services field. Students will learn basic practical skills such as dishwashing, pot- scrubbing, kitchen maintenance, bussing, and basic food preparation. Training in personal hygiene, appropriate work behaviour, safety, and Sanitation, communication skills, and job information, as it applies to Food Services, will be provided. BASIC OCCUPATIONAL EDUCATION - ELECTRONICS ASSEMBLY PROGRAM This program will train students with special needs to work competitively in industry as electronic assembly workers. Among the competitive job skills required are wire harnessing, board stuffing, soldering, general assembly, transformer industry skills (wiring, winding, and lamination stacking). The core curriculum includes: Communication Skills, Job Related Information, Job Related Academics, and selected competencies from the Daily Living Skills course. Specialized curriculum would include basic theory in electricity and electronics. FUNCTIONAL LITERACY FOR ADULTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Adults will learn functional applications of their basic literacy and numeracy skills in order to gain access to the services and resources in the community. An individual educational plan is designed for each student based on the reading, writing and math skills necessary to function within the content areas of: (1) consumer math, 2) community and self-awareness, and 3) communications and written language. CAREER AND JOB PREPARATION FOR ADULTS WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENTS This program is geared for deaf adults who have unclear vocational goals and/or who have experienced difficulty in obtaining or maintaining work. The purpose of the program is to provide awareness, skills, and work experience which will enable deaf adults to make decisions regarding career and lifestyle and learn how to implement these decisions This course will be taught using total communication (sign language and speech). | Be neo a eee ual
