Health and Safety Committee sponsors workshops No, it’s not a mugging in a classroom: Psychiatric Nursing instructor Paula Maisonville (far right) watches colleagues Sharon Civitarese (left) and Marie Bell (right) as they demonstrate how to manage aggressive and violent behaviour in the workplace without taking violent action. The workshop, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, was sponsored by the College's Health and Safety Committee and was held September 2 for Psychiatric Nursing instructors at the College. “We had a situation where one of our students ended up ina dangerous position at a practicum worksite,” said Maisonville. “That’s when we realized that a lot of our instructors don’t even know how to defend themselves in dangerous situations.” The majority of Psychiatric Nursing students receive this type of training at their permanent workplace once they graduate. Using funds available from the Health and Safety Committee, Maisonville organized the one- day workshop for her colleagues. “Money is available to other groups, departments or faculties if they have a need for training regarding health and safety issues,” she says. For more information or an application for funds, contact one of the Health and Safety Committee members: Paula Maisonville or Jacquie Gresko (faculty reps), Sandy McKinley or Trina Marples (BCGEU reps), and Pat Thomasson or Lou Rene Legge (administration reps).
