The Douglas College badminton team recently did something few Westerners have accomplished for years; they came back from Ottawa with gold and silver in their pockets. Co-captain Chantal Jobin led the way with a gold-medal win- ning performance as Royals captured four medals at the CCAA National Badminton Champion- ships in Ottawa on March 14. Douglas College represented B.C. in all five divisions at the event, the first time a single col- lege has provided all the players on a provincial team. The medal feast also provided a fitting swan song for Royals coach Arif Mawani, who is leaving Douglas College to devote more time to coaching the provincial badminton squad. “lam very proud of the team,” says Mawani. “Five of our players were experiencing national com- petition for the first time.” Following her selection as Canadian community college female athlete of the month for February, Jobin surged to the national women’s singles title with an 11-13, 11-1 victory over Isabelle Des Lauriers of Quebec’s College Ste. Jerome. Douglas College’s Chris Tren- holme won a silver in men’s singles, while the mixed doubles team of Sharon Halpin and Adrian Lee also won silver medals. Evy Miki and Rachel Shiv defeated Ontario in the women’s doubles bronze-medal game, while Howe Le and Dak Ban finished fourth in men’s doubles.
