June 2003 Barbara K. Adamski OP Contributor Don’t know what to do with the kids this summer? Avoid the “I’ve got nothing to do” blues by enrolling them in one of New Westminster's most popular sum- mer activities, the New Westminster Police Department's Summer Soccer School. Not only do participants get a chance to improve their skills, spending a week kicking around with off- duty officers enables them to get to know members of their local department on a first-name basis, building a rapport that extends far past the soccer pitch. Says ten-year-old Kaede Hislop, who has attended the past few years and plans on attending again this summer, “It’s not about playing games and stuff. It’s about skills. That’s where I learned to drop-kick.” Still, she notes the fact that skills are taught in a fun way. For example, participants are encouraged to kick the soccer ball through a hole in a piece of brightly painted plywood. What’s so fun about that? Constable Bruce Ballingall’s smiling face is poking through the hole, encouraging kickers to be right on target. Ballingall—known affectionately as “Chicken Legs”—has been active in the soccer school for 18 years. “The kids get to see cops as real people, improve their soccer skills, and have fun—which is what sum- mer'’s all about,” he says. Despite her personal emphasis on the importance of skill building, Hislop admits that the festivities are her favourite part of the camp. “Every year we have teams and decorate floats and banners. We make up a name and cheer. And at the end we have a parade.” Other fun activities include an orientation of vari- ous police vehicles, a demonstration by the dog sec- tion, and a special visit from the New Westminster Fire Department. On the final day, Chief Constable Sports ¢ the other press © Lorne Zapotichny makes a special appearance at the Recognition Ceremony honouring each of the partic- ipants. Introduced in 1981, the school has played an important role in the lives of many. Some participants go on to become instructors in the program, volun- teering their time and energy to ensure children from another generation have the same positive experience. This year the soccer school will be held at Upper Hume Park in New Westminster, from July 21 to 25. But if you plan on enrolling your children, youd bet- ter register soon. The school is always filled to capaci- ty. Cost is $80 per child and this includes a T-shirt as well as all the fun a five- to ten-year-old can handle.
