Wednesday November 25 If you’re on Granville, head to The Venue for Moneen if you dig the alexisonfire-esque stylings of this Ontario emo band. You’re by the waterfront? Find yourself at Heathenfest fearturing Belfagor and Scythia if hearing damage is your fancy. My pick: Heathenfest unless you’re wearing girls’ jeans. Thursday November 26 Blue Rodeo will be at the Center for the Performing Arts tonight, with supporting act Skydigger. If you feel a little more classical, head over to the Orpheum for Russian Composer Night which is sure to feature excellent romantic music from the famous five. My pick: VSO— it’s worth the sit Friday November 27 One hell of a night for live music in Vancouver; Punk Gods SNFU are rocking the Biltmore Cabaret with their friends in Left Spine Down. If you’re in the downtown core, the Commodore Ballrom hosts Daniel Wesley for a great night with some local pride. Are you up for some dancing instead? Go to the Grandview Legion hall for local ska legends Los Furios’ CD release party, featuring the Bone Daddies. Or, check out Malone’s Pub for the Mary’s Gunns show; pricy beer, and usually the crowd is full of assholes, but the show ain’t bad. The Trews are playing the Rio Theatre, but this sucker’s sold out, so scalp if you must. My pick: Every show has its perks, but my faith lies in the Furios Saturday November 28 ; Hang around Pat’s Pub if you like the stylings of White Owl and Sex Church, which guarantees to be a good night. Or you could strut on down to Pub 340, where all the rockers of Vancouver will be hanging out with Stones tribute band Mick Believe & Tongue. Supporting act the Mighty Lightening Hendrix Tribute will be there as well; so missing this bill would be a bummer. My pick: Go to 340, man, it'll trip you out. ee Mick Believe Spider-Man takes to web “singing” Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark adding some final touches to the long-awaited musical ai=1-A A= Ox- TAAL ENE By Angela Espinoza he long awaited Spider-Man musical has finally found its leading man: Reeve Carney. Carney is already the lead singer of the up-and-coming band Carney, which I feel can best be described as an indie take on the Maroon 5 rip-off genre popularized by The Last Goodnight. Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is not the first theatre adaption of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. The first adaption was be absolutely fantastic, or the whole thing will be a mess of colossal proportions. Given Taymor’s credibility with the stage, I assume the direction will be done well, however as a film director, she clearly learned nothing from casting Wood as a singing female lead. Not that Wood is a bad singer, she’s just... sub-par. Carney as the lead aside, I worry this show is focusing more on star potential than on the show itself. I'd be lying if I said I wasn’t interested “To pick the lead singer of a popular MySpace band over a professional theatre actor seems to further prove they’re relying on star power over show value.” produced in Saudi Arabia in 2002, based on the first film of the series. Universal Studios Hollywood also concocted their own large- scale production based on the first film, entitled Spider-Man Rocks! , which ran from May 2002 until August 2004. Turn Off the Dark is the first Broadway-based Spider-Man adaption, which so far seems to be going all out in hopes of achieving recognition, spending upwards of $54 million on the production . First off, U2’s Bono and The Edge will be writing original music for the entire show. Actress Evan Rachel Wood will be portraying Mary Jane Watson, while Scottish actor Alan Cumming, best known for his role as Nightcrawler in X2: X-Men United, will be portraying Norman Osborn, a.k.a. The Green Goblin. The musical is to be directed by Julie Taymor, known for her critically praised The Lion King musical adaption and whatever Across the Universe was supposed to be. That being said, we can all expect one of two things will happen: the show will in seeing it myself, although I do find the idea a tad strange. The Spider-Man story just doesn’t seem dramatic or powerful enough to be a mature musical -- it seems like something more for a child to enjoy, especially considering the introduction of a new villain known as “Swiss Miss’... good god. Now, if someone wanted to do a musical adaption of Batman, I can see that being an epic experience. In all honesty though, I’m just mainly interested in seeing if J. Jonah Jameson gets his own song entitled “Pictures of Spider-Man”... hey, it could happen! Back to Carney, he certainly has the right voice, and he does look considerably like Tobey Maguire, so I think we can say he’s been properly chosen. Although, to pick the lead singer of a popular MySpace band over a professional theatre actor seems to further prove they’re relying on star power over show value. The show is expected to premiere on Broadway in February 2010. 15
