ink I’ve found out why movies gely suck in the nineties. Not ing a television right now, I ent been inundated with mmercials, interviews, trailers soundbites. So when I saw Very d Things the other night, I was ocked by the shocking bits, and rprised by the surprising bits. hagine, going to a film without owing a single line! And after fourteen years of ing, there is a promise that e might be a resolution in the oing dance between Counselor na Troi, Marina Sirtis, and wvie's title splashed across maga- zine pages; that would have been perfect! But nooooos, the market- ing dolts had to ruin the whole thing by throwing the three legged dog on every network countless times a day. Instead of revelling in the new heights (or depths) of the harrowed protago- nists, moviegoers will be enveloped by the nagging thought, “gee, that weird guy is a quadri- plegic in the poster, when does that happen?” A dark comedy that makes Shallow Grave look like a Scooby Doo cartoon, VBT is certainly not for everyone. This is a film that should show legs with the ‘Tarantino crowd. The premise is simple: A young man, about to Riker. Mulligen, a local reviewer for CFOX, said he has seen Insurrection and loved it. On Friday the world will be able to judge for themselves if Star Trek IX: Insurection will be able to live down the stigma of being an odd num- bered Trek movie. ja zz Fvents Salif Reita Friday, February 16, 1998 Vogue Theatre (918 Granville St.) At 8pm $30/$27 Students, Snrs., Jazz Friends Kiss Project Ken Aldcroft Trio Catriona Strang & Francois Houle Houle/Tarry/ Van Der Schyff Friday, January 29, 1998 Performance Works, Granville Island At 8pm $15/$12 Students, Snrs., Jazz Friends reFrayne intet Saturday, February Western Front (303 E. 8th Ave.) 9pm $12/$10 Students, Snrs., Jazz Friends Georg Graewe wed Cameron Diaz—let’s face it, she could be named Marvin and wed still remember her as Cameron Diaz—is taken to Vegas for his bachelor party. Here is where the best filmwork lies, with the coked up fivesome inspiring bleeding colours and irregular camerawork. Sobriety hits fairly quickly, when buddy#3, played by Jeremy Piven (Ellen, Larry Sanders Show), accidentally kills the obligatory stripper/hooker, and the rest of the film is them dealing with the body. Oh, and one or two of them show traces of a conscience, as well. Diaz, of course, is sublime and simple as the obsessed bride to be. But once again, the ads give away her true nature, which was a shock to the preview audience. Christian Slater, of whom I am definitely not a fan, was passable as the personally powered sleazoid Boyd, despite his graduation from Jack Nicholson heir to Jack Nicholson impersonator. Piven is excellent, traversing the path between obsessive self-indulgence and blithering depression smartly and, if possible, subtly. Spouting the nasty but realistic kinds of lines typical of this screenplay: (to his brother, whose youngest son is physically disabled, during an argument) “Your family is one crutch away from a telethon,’ Piven is the driving force in this flick - you'll get the pun when $15/$12 Students, Snrs., Jazz Friends NOW Orchestra with Wadada Leo Smith you see the picture - no matter how many of Slater's agents try to claim otherwise. I enjoy films that invoke the under-the-breath phrases “Holy shit!” and “did they really just do that?” Very Bad Things, minus the ads, illicited many such remarks. This film wasn't perfect, by any means, but the message is clear. If I enjoyed this slightly-above-aver- age fare this much, how much would I enjoy the great films with- out jerks in marketing ruining everything. Advice to you schleps screwing with my moviegoing: Fuck off with the trailers, already!
